Board of Directors

Although Welch Allyn remains family-owned, the company is governed by a board of directors who provide oversight and direction to the overall strategic and operating performance of the company.

Robert (Bob) J. Bennett

Robert (Bob) J. Bennett has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 1999.

He has served in various executive and board capacities with responsibilities for mergers, acquisitions and integration of more than seventy banks. Additional experience includes international management consulting, information systems marketing, and industrial financial management. Bob was chairman of M&T Bank, prior to his retirement in 2000 and remains on the board of directors there. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors for both Farmers & Traders Life Insurance Company and Hand Held Products, Inc.

Mr. Bennett is a graduate of Babson College, holds a M.B.A. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management program.

W. Scott Allyn, M.D.

W. Scott Allyn, M.D. has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 2005.

He earned his B.A. degree from Trinity College and his M.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, before completing his residency at the Santa Monica Hospital/UCLA Family Residency Program.

Currently, Scott is a family practitioner in Skaneateles, N.Y. where he co-founded the FamilyCare Medical Group. He is also on the board of directors for the Allyn Foundation.

Tasha Allyn Given

Tasha Allyn Given was named to the Welch Allyn board of drectors in 2005, one of three directors from the Allyn family.

Tasha has a B.A. degree from Colby College.

Peer Allyn Soderberg, M.D.

Peer Allyn Soderberg, M.D., has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 2005 and is one of three Allyn family members on the board. He is medical director of Jordan/Elbridge and Marcellus Volunteer Emergency Services.

Peer earned his B.S. degree at Washington and Lee University and his M.D. at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  He completed his residency at the St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center and is board-certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Julie A. Shimer, Ph. D.

Julie A. Shimer, Ph. D. has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 2002. She was named president and CEO of the company in January 2007.

Prior to Welch Allyn, she was president & CEO of Cupertino, Calif.-based Vocera Communications, a leading wireless communications company. She also serves on the board of directors at Netgear.

She holds a B.S. degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.

Larry Buckelew

Larry Buckelew, former president and CEO of Gambro Healthcare, Inc., has more than 30 years experience in the healthcare industry.  Formerly the president of TFX Medical Group and president and COO of Sunrise Medical, Inc., Buckelew has ample leadership experience, including serving on a variety of boards-Cymed, Inc., Gambro Healthcare, Inc., Sunrise Medical, Inc., Surgical Services and Weck Closure Systems

James Crook Jr.

James Crook, Jr. was the CEO of IDX Systems Corporation, a healthcare software and services company that provides products for healthcare practitioners to automate financial, administrative and patient access operations, before IDX was acquired by General Electric in 2006.  He started his career with IBM prior to working 25-years with IDX in a number of executive operating roles.  Crook serves as an advisor to the Accel-KKR board of directors and is active on several non-profit and not-for-profit boards, including Volunteers in Medicine, Champlain College and Development Associates International.

Yvonne Curl

Yvonne Curl is the former chief marketing officer for Avaya, Inc., a communications corporation headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J.  Previously, she worked in a variety of capacities at Xerox Corporation, leaving as the senior vice president and general manager of the Public Sector Worldwide.  Additionally, Curl's service on the HealthSouth board of directors since 2004, has given her an accelerated education on the delivery side of healthcare, which complements her extensive business experience.  She also serves on the Charming Shoppes and Nationwide boards.

Samir Desai

Prior to his appointment to the Board of Directors at Welch Allyn, Samir Desai was the senior vice president and General Manager of iDen Networks and Devices, a Motorola business segment.  Over the course of his 36-year tenure at Motorola, Desai has developed a strong engineering and management background.  A member of the Larsen & Toubro Infotech Limited board of directors, Desai will provide leadership and innovation experience to the board.

Barry Wilson

Another appointee, Barry Wilson, is currently senior vice president, international, and executive and operating committee member of Medtronic, Inc. He is a former president of the international business of the Lederle division of American Cyanamid, a research-based life sciences company, and was president, Europe, of Bristol-Myers Squibb. He has served on the board of directors of Bausch & Lomb since 2003, and was previously a director of Mallinckrodt.  In 2007, he was elected to the board of the Rezidor Hotel Group. He also served as a senior advisor to AdvaMed, the U.S. medical device trade association.
